New Theatre Oxford is the city’s largest live entertainment venue, hosting an impressive programme of West End musicals, comedy, opera, dance and live music. Since opening in 1934, it has welcomed legendary performers and continues to be a key cultural destination in the region.
The theatre is committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment, ensuring that guests with additional needs can enjoy performances as comfortably as possible. While the building retains elements of its historic design, a number of accessibility features are in place to support a mobility friendly visit.
Level access is available to the Box Office and main foyer on George Street, with automatic push-button doors making entry straightforward for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility. From here, access to the Stalls level is supported via a wheelchair lift, as most areas of the theatre are otherwise reached by steps. It is important to note that this venue is not suitable for mobility scooter users due to access limitations.
Within the auditorium, there are four designated wheelchair spaces located at the rear of the Stalls, each with space for a companion to sit alongside. These positions must be booked in advance, and staff are available to assist with access on arrival. If a wheelchair is not required during the performance, it can be safely stored by the front of house team.
Accessible toilet facilities are available both in the main foyer and within the Stalls area, providing convenient access for visitors seated on this level.
Seating throughout the theatre features fixed armrests, with a standard width of approximately 44cm. For those requiring more flexible seating arrangements, limited freestanding seating is available within the boxes and upper platforms, although these may offer restricted views.
To support visitors with visual impairments, the theatre offers access services such as audio described performances and occasional touch tours. For guests who are D/deaf or hard of hearing, the venue uses a Mobile Connect system, allowing sound to be streamed directly to personal devices for an enhanced listening experience.
Although New Theatre Oxford has some structural limitations due to its design, the combination of step-free entry points, accessible facilities, and dedicated staff support helps create a welcoming and accessible experience for a wide range of visitors.
