The Trafalgar Theatre is a beautifully restored Grade II listed venue in London’s West End, combining historic architecture with modern facilities following a major refurbishment. While the building retains its original character, a range of accessibility features are in place to support visitors with additional needs.
Access into the theatre begins at street level via the main entrance on Whitehall, where the foyer, box office and foyer bar are located. Although there are steps directly outside this entrance, a step-free route is available via Spring Gardens, just behind the theatre. From the foyer, visitors can use a lift to reach the lower level and access the Stalls auditorium through the rear entrances.
The Stalls is the most accessible seating area, with a gentle rake and step-free access once inside. Wheelchair spaces, along with companion seating, are positioned on the aisles in Rows B and H. Due to lift size restrictions, the theatre can only accommodate smaller wheelchairs, with a maximum width of 65cm and length of 110cm, and mobility scooters are not permitted. Guests are advised to arrive at least 20 minutes before the performance to allow time for access arrangements.
While the Dress Circle offers additional seating, it is less accessible due to its steep rake and multiple steps between rows. Access to this level involves navigating between 14 and 25 steps depending on the entrance used, with further steps required within the seating area.
An accessible toilet is available in the Stalls Bar area, which can be reached via lift from the foyer. Other toilet facilities throughout the venue involve stairs, so the Stalls level remains the most practical option for step-free access. The Stalls Bar itself is more spacious and can also be accessed using the lift, and staff are happy to provide drinks directly to your seat if needed.
Assistance dogs are welcome in the auditorium and can remain with their owners during the performance. Alternatively, trained staff can care for them during the show if preferred.
For visitors with visual impairments, the theatre offers audio described performances and touch tours, which can be arranged in advance. Guests who are D/deaf or hard of hearing can access both Radio and Mobile Connect hearing enhancement systems, with devices available at the venue to support a clearer audio experience.
Although the Trafalgar Theatre is a historic building with some physical limitations, the availability of step-free routes to the Stalls, wheelchair spaces, lift access, and inclusive support services helps create a welcoming and accessible environment for a wide range of visitors.
