The British Wildlife Centre in Surrey offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover and learn about the animals that live across the British Isles. Dedicated to conservation and education, the centre is home to more than 40 native species living in carefully designed enclosures that reflect their natural habitats. Visitors can see a wide variety of wildlife including otters, Scottish wildcats, pine martens, foxes, badgers and deer, alongside impressive free flying British owls. One of the most popular experiences is the walk through red squirrel enclosure, where visitors can observe these rare native animals moving freely through a woodland setting. Keeper talks throughout the day provide fascinating insight into the animals’ behaviour, conservation efforts and the importance of protecting British wildlife. Younger visitors can also enjoy Pip’s Corner, a wildlife themed activity area designed for children, while picnic areas and a café offer places to relax during the visit.
The centre provides several features to support a mobility friendly visit. There is an on site car park with five designated disabled parking spaces located approximately 30 metres from the main entrance. From the car park there is level access to the visitor centre, which houses the admission desk, coffee shop and gift shop. The entrance features double doors and a ramped threshold with no steps, and all internal areas including the barn, hedgerow building and lecture theatre are located on ground level with step free access.
Outdoor areas around the centre are also step free. Many of the main pathways are smooth tarmac, with two wooden boardwalks connecting parts of the site. Around some of the animal enclosures there are gravel areas, although animals can still be viewed clearly from the main tarmac paths. Picnic areas are located on grass, and visitors should note that the picnic area in front of the visitor centre is reached via a steep gravel path which may be difficult for wheelchair users.
An accessible unisex toilet is located outside the coffee shop and includes ramped access. The facility includes grab rails, transfer space beside the toilet, disposal facilities and an automatic tap on the wash basin. Free entry is available for carers accompanying a paying disabled visitor when appropriate supporting documentation is presented.
With its focus on native species, educational talks and accessible pathways, the British Wildlife Centre offers a relaxed and informative day out for visitors interested in discovering Britain’s wildlife.
