Hemsley Conservation Centre

Hemsley Conservation Centre is a small, family-friendly attraction focused on conservation, education and close-up animal experiences. The centre is home to a variety of fascinating species including meerkats, lemurs, marmosets and kinkajous, offering visitors the chance to discover animals that are often rare or lesser known.

A key highlight of a visit is the opportunity to take part in animal encounters, where guests can get closer to the animals and learn more about them from knowledgeable keepers. These experiences can include everything from feeding reptiles to handling insects, making it an engaging and interactive day out for both children and adults. Daily talks such as Reptiles Live! and Monkey Madness! provide further insight into the animals and the conservation work carried out by the centre.

Hemsley Conservation Centre offers a relaxed and welcoming environment, though visitors should be aware that accessibility can vary across the site. There is level access from the car park to the main entrance, with parking located approximately 30 metres away, although there are no designated disabled bays. Pathways throughout the attraction are made up of compressed woodchip, decking and gravel, which may require some assistance for those using manual wheelchairs.

While the site is not fully step free, most buildings can be accessed and ramps are available where needed. Animal enclosures and experiences are generally accessible, but some areas may be more challenging depending on ground conditions.

Accessible facilities include a disabled toilet located within the main toilet block. This includes handrails, transfer space, a lever tap wash basin and disposal facilities.

Visitors who require a carer to attend with them can receive free entry for one accompanying carer when visiting with a paying disabled guest. Evidence is required and can include a Blue Badge, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) letter or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) documentation.

For visitors with sensory needs, sensory bags are available to borrow from the entrance for a £15 refundable deposit. These include ear defenders, fidget toys and a zoo map with a schedule of animal talks to help plan your visit.
