Northumberland Zoo offers a welcoming and inclusive wildlife experience in the North East, set within a peaceful natural landscape. The zoo is home to a wide range of animals, with multiple viewing points throughout the site allowing visitors to observe species in carefully designed habitats that prioritise animal welfare.
Visitors can explore the zoo at a relaxed pace, enjoying a mix of animal encounters, outdoor play areas, and picnic spots. Facilities such as the Bear Falls Café, Adventure Land play area, and domestic animal zones provide a varied and family-friendly day out. The zoo also offers a companion app, helping visitors learn more about the animals in an accessible and engaging way.
From an accessibility perspective, Northumberland Zoo has made strong efforts to support visitors with a wide range of needs. The majority of the zoo is situated on relatively flat ground, with pathways made from concrete and tar planings. While most routes are accessible, some areas can be more challenging due to loose surfaces, particularly for manual wheelchair users.
The ‘River Walk’ area is currently not wheelchair accessible due to steep inclines, and there are additional steep slopes near the riverside that may not be suitable for wheeled mobility aids. Visitors are encouraged to consult the accessibility map in advance to plan the most suitable route around the zoo.
Accessible parking is available close to the entrance, although visitors should be aware that there is a section of loose stone between the car park and entrance which may make access more difficult. Drop-off is permitted near the entrance to assist with unloading.
Accessible toilet facilities are located at several points throughout the zoo, including near the entrance, café, and animal areas. These include handrails and alarm systems, although hoist facilities are not currently available.
A manual wheelchair is available to hire from reception, with advance booking recommended to ensure availability.
Northumberland Zoo is a certified sensory inclusive attraction, with staff trained to support visitors with sensory needs. Sensory bags are available, including noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, cue cards, and weighted lap pads. A social story is also available to help visitors prepare for their visit in advance.
The zoo provides support for neurodivergent visitors, with staff able to highlight quieter and busier areas across the site. Visitors are encouraged to attend during off-peak times for a more relaxed experience, and quiet days are occasionally scheduled throughout the year.
Free admission is available for one accompanying carer, subject to appropriate documentation such as a Blue Badge, PIP/DLA letter, or Access Card.
Assistance dogs are permitted, but all other dogs and pets are not allowed on-site or in the car park due to animal welfare considerations.
With its focus on inclusion, sensory support, and accessible facilities, Northumberland Zoo provides a thoughtful and mobility friendly day out. While some areas may require planning due to terrain, the zoo offers a supportive environment for visitors of all abilities.
