The Lyceum Theatre is one of London’s most historic and recognisable venues, with a long history dating back to the 18th century. Today, it is best known as the home of Disney’s The Lion King, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Located in the West End, the theatre combines traditional architecture with modern adaptations, offering a memorable experience while providing a range of accessibility features to support a mobility friendly visit.

Inside, the theatre retains much of its historic charm, with seating arranged across multiple levels including the Stalls, Royal Circle and Grand Circle. The auditorium offers an immersive atmosphere with strong sightlines, although the traditional layout means there are stairs and tiered seating throughout much of the venue. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead when selecting seats to ensure the most suitable option for their needs.

Step-free access is available via a dedicated entrance on Wellington Street, which provides level entry into the building. From here, a gentle slope leads directly to the Stalls seating area and accessible toilets, making this the most mobility friendly route into the theatre. The Stalls level is also where wheelchair users are accommodated, with six designated wheelchair spaces available. These must be booked in advance, and it is important to provide wheelchair dimensions at the time of booking, as some spaces have size limitations.

Lift access is available via an alternative entrance on Exeter Street, allowing access to upper levels. However, it is important to note that even with lift access, most seating areas beyond the Stalls still require the use of steps within the auditorium. As a result, the Stalls generally offers the most accessible seating option for visitors with limited mobility.

Accessible toilet facilities are located near the step-free entrance and can be reached easily from the Stalls area. Additional toilets are available on other levels, although these are accessed via stairs.

Parking is not available directly at the theatre, but its central London location means there are accessible transport links nearby. Visitors may wish to plan their journey in advance to identify the most suitable accessible routes and parking options in the surrounding area.

Assistance dogs are welcome within the theatre and can either remain with their owner during the performance or be cared for by staff if arranged in advance. Staff are available throughout the venue to provide support and assist with access where needed.

The theatre offers a range of accessibility services to enhance the experience for visitors with hearing or visual impairments. Audio description, captioning and translation services are available through a mobile-based system, allowing visitors to access enhanced content directly on their own device. Additional support such as large print and Braille programmes may also be available on request.

Hearing support is also provided through a mobile sound enhancement system, which streams audio directly to personal devices or compatible hearing aids. Visitors are advised to download the relevant app in advance and bring headphones for the best experience.

While the historic nature of the Lyceum Theatre means there are some limitations, particularly with steps in upper levels, the combination of step-free entry, accessible facilities, assistive technology and staff support ensures that it remains a welcoming and mobility friendly venue for enjoying world-class theatre in London.
