The Savoy Theatre is one of London’s most historic and iconic venues. Opened in 1881, it is famously known as the home of Gilbert and Sullivan productions and was the first public building in the world to be lit entirely by electric light. Located next to the Savoy Hotel, it remains a key part of the West End theatre scene.
While the theatre retains its historic character, a number of accessibility measures are in place to support visitors with additional needs.
Step-free access is available via the Carting Lane entrance, which provides level access directly into the Dress Circle. This is the primary access point for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility. Guests planning to use this entrance should arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before the performance and notify Stage Door staff upon arrival. Alternatively, staff can escort visitors from the main Savoy Court entrance, although this involves a longer route around the building.
There is no lift within the theatre, and access between levels is via stairs only. The Stalls are not recommended for guests with limited mobility due to the 75 steps required from the foyer. The Dress Circle, accessed via Carting Lane, is the most suitable and accessible area.
Wheelchair access is limited, with space for:
One wheelchair user with a companion, or
Two wheelchair users without companions per performance
For those able to transfer from a wheelchair, seating is available in the Dress Circle, with Rows F and G offering the most accessible options (requiring minimal steps). The designated wheelchair space remains the only fully step-free seating position.
Accessible toilet facilities are located on the Dress Circle level. Standard toilets are available across all levels, although most require stair access.
Additional accessibility features include:
Due to the theatre’s historic layout, accessibility is more limited compared to modern venues. However, with careful planning and support from staff, the Savoy Theatre still offers an enjoyable and inclusive experience for many visitors.
