The Duke of York’s Theatre is a historic West End venue that has welcomed audiences since 1892, hosting acclaimed productions and legendary performers such as Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom. While the building retains much of its original character, thoughtful accessibility features are in place to support a range of visitors.

The main entrance is at street level, providing step-free access into the box office, foyer, and Royal Circle level. This is the most accessible area of the theatre. Within the Royal Circle, there are two wheelchair spaces available per performance, each with a companion seat. Due to the historic layout, this is the maximum capacity for wheelchair users at any one time, so advance booking is essential.

Guests can either remain in their wheelchair in Row C of the Royal Circle, although this position does have a slightly restricted view, or transfer to a designated seat in Row D, which offers a clearer view of the stage. In this case, wheelchairs can be safely stored in the foyer by front of house staff. Wheelchair space widths vary slightly, measuring approximately 85.5cm on the right-hand side and 91cm on the left when facing the stage.

An accessible toilet is located on the right-hand side of the main foyer, directly opposite the auditorium entrance to the Royal Circle. This facility is step-free and conveniently positioned for easy access during your visit.

Assistance dogs are welcome at the theatre, with space for up to two per performance. Dogs can remain with their owners if suitable seating is booked, or they can be cared for by staff in the foyer if preferred.

For guests who are D/deaf or hard of hearing, the theatre is equipped with an infrared hearing system that works throughout the auditorium, with both loop and headset options available. Visitors are encouraged to contact the box office in advance to reserve equipment and ensure they are seated in the most suitable area for optimal reception.

Additional services such as audio-described performances and other accessibility support are available for visually impaired guests, depending on the production.

While the Duke of York’s Theatre is a listed and historic venue, the combination of step-free access to the Royal Circle, wheelchair spaces, and dedicated support services helps create a more inclusive and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
