Theatre Royal Glasgow

The Theatre Royal Glasgow is one of Scotland’s most historic venues, originally opened in 1867 and now home to prestigious companies such as Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet. While the building retains its Victorian charm, it has been adapted to provide a wide range of accessibility features for visitors.

Step-free access is available via the main entrance on the ground floor, making entry into the theatre straightforward for those with mobility needs. The Stalls is the most accessible area, offering step-free access throughout the auditorium. While there is step-free seating available at the rear of each level, most seating areas beyond this involve steps down into the rows, so careful seat selection is important.

The theatre provides eight wheelchair spaces in total. Two are located in Row E of the Stalls, with additional spaces positioned at the rear of the other levels. For visitors who prefer to transfer into a theatre seat, several aisle seats in the Stalls, including rows J and K, are suitable options. Staff are available to assist and can help store mobility aids during the performance if required.

Lift access is available to all levels of the theatre, ensuring that guests can move between floors with ease. Accessible toilets are also available on every level, all of which can be reached via lift, providing convenience no matter where you are seated.

All bar areas within the venue are accessible either step-free or via lift, and an at-seat service is available, allowing guests to order refreshments directly to their seats without needing to navigate busy spaces.

For visitors with visual impairments, the theatre offers audio described performances and touch tours for selected shows. Seating in the front rows of the Stalls is generally recommended for the best view of the stage, although the Mobile Connect system allows flexibility to sit in any area during audio described performances.

Guests who are D/deaf or hard of hearing can make use of the Mobile Connect hearing assistance system, which works throughout the auditorium and streams enhanced audio directly to a personal device. This system can be used from any seat, making it a flexible option for visitors.

For BSL interpreted and captioned performances, seating in the Stalls or Dress Circle is recommended to ensure the best view of interpreters or caption units.

Although the Theatre Royal Glasgow is a historic venue, the combination of step-free access, lifts to all levels, wheelchair spaces, and inclusive services ensures a welcoming and accessible experience for a wide range of theatre-goers.
