Chester Zoo in Cheshire is one of the most popular wildlife attractions in the UK, home to more than 20,000 animals across over 500 species. Spread across 128 acres of landscaped habitats and themed zones, the zoo offers visitors the opportunity to explore wildlife from around the world while supporting global conservation efforts. From the African savannah where lions, cheetahs and painted dogs roam, to tropical rainforest environments filled with critically endangered Sumatran orangutans, the zoo provides immersive experiences that highlight both animal welfare and conservation education. Visitors can also see Asian elephants, tigers, giraffes and many other species while learning about the zoo’s important work to prevent extinction and protect wildlife habitats.

Chester Zoo aims to provide a mobility friendly and inclusive experience for visitors with a wide range of accessibility needs. Accessible pathways run throughout the site, making it easier for wheelchair users, mobility scooter users and visitors with limited mobility to explore the zoo. Free disabled parking is available near the main entrance, and visitors can borrow wheelchairs or electric mobility scooters for the day with a refundable deposit. Accessible toilets are located across the zoo grounds, including a Changing Places facility at the Jubilee toilets equipped with a hoist, adjustable changing bench and accessible sink.

Many attractions within the zoo include additional accessibility features. A wheelchair lift is available in the Realm of the Red Ape building for visitors who may find ramps difficult to use, and the Lazy River Boat Trip can accommodate wheelchair users, although mobility scooters are not permitted on the boat itself. Some bridges and areas, such as Elephant Bridge and the Wooden Bats Bridge, include steeper gradients, so visitors may wish to request assistance from staff when travelling through these sections. Multiple viewing points around animal habitats also allow visitors to choose accessible vantage points when observing animals.

The zoo provides a range of resources to support visitors with hidden disabilities or sensory needs. Chester Zoo participates in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, allowing visitors to wear a sunflower symbol to indicate they may require additional support. Sensory bags containing helpful items such as fidget toys and calming tools are available to borrow from Adventure HQ, and a sensory trail highlights areas of the zoo that offer engaging sensory experiences through sounds, textures and smells. For visitors who prefer quieter visits, the zoo recommends attending outside school holidays or during weekdays.

Visitors who require assistance can bring an accompanying carer free of charge when appropriate documentation is presented on arrival. Assistance dogs are permitted in certain areas of the zoo but must follow the zoo’s assistance dog policy and be kept on a lead at all times. BSL interpretation is also available in some areas of the zoo through QR coded videos, with dedicated BSL talks and tours taking place regularly.

With its extensive wildlife habitats, conservation focus and inclusive visitor facilities, Chester Zoo offers a memorable and accessible day out for families and wildlife enthusiasts visiting Cheshire.
