Colchester Zoo

Colchester Zoo in Essex is one of the UK’s leading wildlife attractions, set across 60 acres of parkland and lakes and home to more than 180 species from around the world. The zoo includes a range of facilities designed to support a mobility friendly visit. Accessible parking spaces are available close to the main entrance for Blue Badge holders, with level access into the entrance building and main zoo grounds. The zoo sits on naturally hilly terrain, so visitors should be aware that some areas include steep slopes or inclines when planning their route around the park. Maps and signage around the site highlight mobility friendly routes to help visitors navigate the zoo more comfortably.

Manual wheelchairs and mobility scooters are available to hire from inside the zoo near the main entrance, although numbers are limited and pre booking is recommended. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own mobility aids. Many pathways throughout the zoo are suitable for wheelchairs, although the natural landscape means some areas may include slopes or ramps.

Accessible facilities are located across the zoo. There are multiple accessible toilets throughout the site and a Changing Places facility near the meerkat enclosure, which can be accessed using a RADAR key. A wheelchair accessible carriage is available on the Lost Madagascar Express road train, allowing visitors with mobility aids to enjoy the ride around the park.

Colchester Zoo also offers support for visitors with sensory or hidden disabilities. Several quiet areas are located throughout the park, and many staff members have autism awareness training to help support guests who may need additional assistance. Portable hearing loops are available in the main entrance building and guest services areas. Some attractions, such as Dinosaur Realm and certain walkthrough exhibits, may include louder sounds or lighting effects, and visitors who are sensitive to noise may wish to bring ear defenders.

Visitors who require a personal assistant during their visit can receive a complimentary ticket for a carer when purchasing a full paying ticket. Evidence of disability may be requested on arrival. Accepted documentation can include a Blue Badge, Personal Independence Payment documentation, Access Card, Brain Injury Identity Card, NHS App confirmation or similar supporting evidence.

Registered assistance dogs are permitted within the zoo under specific conditions. Owners may be asked to provide confirmation of the dog’s vaccinations and follow the zoo’s assistance dog code of conduct to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the animals and visitors. Emotional support animals are not permitted.
