Exmoor Zoo

Exmoor Zoo is a unique wildlife park set within a scenic North Devon valley, offering visitors the chance to discover a wide range of unusual and fascinating animals in a relaxed countryside setting. Known for focusing on smaller and lesser known species, the zoo has gradually expanded its collection to include larger animals while maintaining a natural and personal atmosphere. Visitors can explore habitats featuring animals such as pumas, maned wolves, cheetahs, reindeer and meerkats, alongside rarer species including sand cats, binturongs, singing dogs and Carpathian lynx. The zoo is also known for its connection to the legendary “Exmoor Beast,” which has become part of the park’s folklore.

Exmoor Zoo places a strong emphasis on interaction and education, with regular talks and animal encounter sessions taking place throughout the day during the summer months. These sessions give visitors the opportunity to learn more about the animals, their habitats and the conservation challenges they face.

The zoo is built on the side of a south west facing valley and sits on a gentle slope, with some areas including steeper inclines. Around 65 percent of the pathways are laid with tarmac to help improve access for wheelchairs and pushchairs, while other paths are made from scree. The lower section of the zoo features more uneven surfaces, which may be difficult for manual wheelchairs but are generally accessible with electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters. There are also two short steeper slopes within the grounds, so visitors using mobility aids may wish to plan their route carefully. An alternative route allows visitors to begin the zoo trail via the café entrance and explore the park in reverse to avoid the steepest incline near the main entrance.

Mobility scooters are available to hire from the zoo, with three scooters available on a first come basis. These can be hired for a daily fee with a refundable deposit, and visitors are advised to reserve in advance during busy periods. A short competence form and instruction on the safe use of the scooter must be completed before entering the zoo.

Accessible parking spaces are located in the main car park next to reception, with additional arrangements available for closer parking if required during busy periods. Visitors can also be dropped off directly outside the reception building if this is more convenient.

An accessible toilet is located near the entrance to the zoo, opposite the squirrel monkey enclosure. This facility includes handrails and a pull down changing table suitable for small children.

Exmoor Zoo offers concession tickets for visitors with disabilities, which can be purchased at reception. Accompanying carers receive a 50 percent discount on admission when supporting a visitor with a disability. Supporting documentation such as a Disability Living Allowance letter, Personal Independence Payment documentation or a disabled badge may be required.

Only fully trained assistance dogs are permitted within the zoo. Emotional support animals are not allowed on site. Visitors bringing assistance dogs may be asked to provide additional information and complete a declaration form on arrival to ensure the safety of both zoo animals and visitors.
