Abbotsbury Swannery, located on the stunning Dorset coast near Chesil Beach, is the only managed colony of nesting mute swans in the world. Set within a peaceful lagoon and nature reserve, the Swannery offers visitors the rare opportunity to walk among hundreds of free roaming swans in a natural environment. The site has a long history dating back to the 11th century when Benedictine monks first established the swan colony. Today, visitors can explore the scenic pathways around the lagoon, watch swans nesting and raising their cygnets, and learn about the birds’ behaviour and conservation. One of the highlights of the day is the traditional swan feeding, which takes place twice daily and includes a fascinating talk from the Swanherd about the colony and its history.
Alongside the wildlife experience, Abbotsbury Swannery offers a variety of family friendly activities. Visitors can explore Dorset’s largest living willow maze, enjoy the Swinging Nests play area, or take part in tractor and trailer rides around the site. The Swanherd’s Hut and History Room provide insight into the heritage of the swannery, while the monks’ herb garden and reed cutter display offer a glimpse into the area’s past. Several viewing points, hides and benches are located around the lagoon, allowing visitors to relax and watch the swans in a peaceful natural setting.
The Swannery provides several features to support a mobility friendly visit. A dedicated disabled parking area is available in the on site car park, with level access from the parking area to the main entrance. Most of the pathways around the Swannery are flat, allowing wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility to explore the majority of the site. Almost all areas are accessible by wheelchair, although the telescope viewing platform may not be accessible.
Accessible toilet facilities are available both at the entrance and within the Swannery grounds near the bouncing bomb exhibit. These facilities include grab rails, lever taps and transfer space to support visitors with mobility needs. The attraction also offers free entry for one companion when accompanying a wheelchair user or visually impaired visitor, with appropriate documentation presented on arrival.
With its peaceful coastal setting, unique wildlife encounters and accessible pathways, Abbotsbury Swannery offers a memorable and relaxing day out for visitors exploring Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.
