Askham Bryan Wildlife and Conservation Park near York offers a relaxed and educational wildlife experience set within the grounds of a historic arboretum. The park is home to a wide variety of animals and provides visitors with the opportunity to learn more about wildlife conservation and animal care. Guests can explore the park at their own pace, discovering animals ranging from reptiles and mammals to insects and birds. Throughout the day, staff and students often share their knowledge with visitors, offering fascinating insights into the animals and their habitats. Visitors can also take part in themed trail activities, hands on encounters with animals such as lemurs or tortoises, and seasonal events including crafts and storytelling. The surrounding woodland and small play area provide additional space for families to explore and relax during their visit.
The park offers several features to support a mobility friendly visit. There is an on site car park with dedicated disabled parking located approximately 30 metres from the entrance. The parking area is concrete surfaced and provides level access to the main entrance. Once inside the park, most areas are relatively level and animal enclosures are designed so they can be viewed comfortably from a seated height.
Visitors should note that many of the pathways throughout the site are grass or compacted earth rather than paved surfaces. While generally level, these paths may become muddy or uneven during wet weather and some visitors using wheelchairs or mobility aids may require assistance in certain areas.
Accessible facilities are available within the park, including an accessible toilet to support visitors with mobility needs. Discounted concession tickets are available for disabled visitors, and carers accompanying a paying disabled guest can receive free entry when appropriate supporting documentation is presented.
Assistance dogs are permitted within the park but visitors must follow the attraction’s guidelines to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the animals. Dogs must have up to date vaccinations, remain under control at all times and be moved away from enclosures if animals show signs of distress. Visitors are also asked to inform staff on arrival if an assistance dog will be accompanying them.
With its peaceful woodland setting, educational wildlife encounters and accessible visitor facilities, Askham Bryan Wildlife and Conservation Park offers an enjoyable and informative day out for visitors exploring the York area.
