Charnwood Museum in Loughborough offers a hands on and engaging journey through the natural and social history of the Charnwood area. Located within Queen’s Park, the museum brings together archaeology, geology, wildlife and local heritage through a range of interactive exhibits and immersive displays. Visitors can discover the region’s volcanic past by handling ancient rocks, explore the natural world through microscopes and displays of insects and wildlife, and learn about the people who lived and worked in the area through exhibits such as a recreated Victorian grocer’s shop. The main entrance offers step free access via a ramp, and there is level access throughout most of the galleries and public areas. Reception and exhibition spaces are designed with sufficient manoeuvring room for wheelchair users, and seating is available throughout the museum including chairs with armrests, armchairs and benches for visitors who may wish to rest. A designated drop off point is located close to the entrance, and Blue Badge parking is available nearby on Granby Street and in local public car parks. The museum also features a fixed hearing assistance system at reception and provides some information in Braille.
Accessible toilet facilities are located to the left of reception and include step free access, transfer space and drop down support rails. Parent and baby changing facilities are also available. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the museum. Visitors can also access the nearby Queen’s Park Café directly from inside the museum, where step free access, accessible seating and table service assistance are available on request.
