Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life in Carlisle explores the rich military heritage of the county and the stories of the soldiers who served in local regiments. Located within the grounds of Carlisle Castle, the museum focuses particularly on the Border Regiment and the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment, tracing their history from early conflicts through to modern times. Visitors can discover a wide range of exhibits including uniforms, medals, weapons, photographs and personal items belonging to soldiers. One of the most immersive highlights is the recreated First World War trench display, where sound and lighting effects help bring the experiences of frontline soldiers to life. Alongside the museum galleries, visitors can also explore the historic setting of Carlisle Castle itself, with its medieval walls and towers reflecting centuries of military history.
Accessibility is supported across much of the museum to provide a largely mobility friendly experience. While the attraction does not have its own car park, the nearest parking is at Castle Car Park approximately 450 metres from the entrance. Blue Badge holders may also park within the outer ward of the castle. Visitors should note there is an incline between the main car park and the museum entrance. Most of the museum galleries are located on the ground floor, making them accessible for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility. Temporary exhibitions are situated on the first floor and can be accessed via a stair lift, which must be arranged in advance by contacting the museum before visiting.
Accessible facilities include an adapted toilet on the ground floor equipped with handrails, lever taps, transfer space and an emergency alarm. Audio guides are also available to support visitors who prefer to listen to exhibition information rather than read displays.
With its immersive trench display, extensive military collections and historic castle setting, Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life offers an engaging and accessible experience exploring the county’s proud military heritage.
