Duff House in Banff is an impressive Georgian mansion that combines grand architecture, fine art and scenic parkland in one historic setting. Designed by renowned Scottish architect William Adam, the house was constructed in the 18th century and has served a variety of roles throughout its history, including a family residence, hotel, sanitarium and military base during the Second World War. Today the building houses an important art collection, with permanent and temporary exhibitions featuring works by well known artists. Visitors can explore elegant galleries and historic rooms while enjoying family friendly activities such as quizzes that encourage guests to spot hidden details and decorative features throughout the house. The surrounding estate offers beautiful parkland walks, with views across the River Deveron, a gothic mausoleum, an ice house and opportunities to spot local wildlife.
Accessibility is considered across the site to support a largely mobility friendly visit. Accessible parking spaces are located approximately 20 metres from the house over level paving, while the main car park is around 100 metres away and features loose gravel and earth paths. Visitors enter the house on the ground floor, and alternative step free access to the shop is available through a side door. A lift inside the house provides wheelchair access to the upper floors, allowing visitors to explore the main gallery areas. Two manual wheelchairs are available to borrow on a first come, first served basis.
Accessible toilet facilities are available within the building. The grounds around the house include a gravel drive and open lawns which are generally accessible, although the grass areas can become soft depending on weather conditions. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the site and within indoor spaces when kept on a lead. Free carer entry is also available for visitors who require assistance, with up to two carers admitted per booking.
With its elegant Georgian architecture, impressive art collections and scenic riverside setting, Duff House offers a welcoming and accessible cultural experience in the north east of Scotland.
