The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is the UK’s largest aquarium, home to over 4,000 marine animals including sharks, sea turtles, rays, jellyfish and seahorses. Visitors can explore a series of themed zones that follow a journey from local Plymouth waters to the open Atlantic Ocean, with highlights including the large Atlantic Ocean tank and the immersive Eddystone Reef exhibit. The aquarium also offers daily talks, feeding demonstrations and interactive experiences, making it both educational and engaging for all ages.
The attraction is designed to be highly accessible, with step free access and ramps throughout the exhibition areas, allowing visitors using wheelchairs or mobility aids to access most displays. A lift is available to reach the Atlantic Ocean exhibit, and seating is provided throughout the aquarium for visitors who may need to rest. Wheelchairs are available to borrow free of charge on a first come, first served basis. Accessible toilets are located within the aquarium and in the Waves café, and include grab rails, lowered wash basins, wide doorways and emergency pull cords.
While there is no main onsite car park, accessible parking is available nearby at Harbour Car Park, and there are three dedicated accessible bays at the rear of the aquarium. The aquarium also offers free carer entry for eligible visitors with valid proof, and assistance dogs are welcome. Quiet sensory sessions are held at selected times throughout the year, providing a calmer experience for visitors with autism, dementia or sensory sensitivities.
With step free access, lift access, wheelchair hire and dedicated sensory sessions, the National Marine Aquarium provides a fully accessible indoor day out in Plymouth for visitors with mobility and sensory accessibility requirements.
