The Roman Baths in Bath are one of the best preserved ancient spa complexes in Europe, welcoming over a million visitors each year to explore this extraordinary historic site. Built around Britain’s only natural hot springs, the Baths allow visitors to walk on original Roman pavements, stand beside the steaming Great Bath and discover the fascinating artefacts uncovered from the sacred spring. The experience combines open air ruins with immersive museum displays, connecting modern visitors with the people who gathered here nearly 2,000 years ago. Highlights include the Great Bath itself, the terrace overlooking the complex and the elegant 18th century Pump Room.
Accessibility is carefully considered across much of the site, although visitors should be aware that the Roman Baths are situated six metres below street level and some steps remain unavoidable in certain areas. Level access is available from the Abbey Church Yard entrance to most ground floor spaces, including the Pump Room, Sun Lounge and Terrace overlooking the Great Bath, as well as to the main shop from Stall Street. Four accessible lifts provide access to the mezzanine displays, lower museum levels, Great Bath and East Baths, with a limit on the number of wheelchair users accessing lower levels at one time for safety reasons. Accessible toilets are located near the entrance and along the Kings Bath corridor.
Visitors can use a hand held audioguide, with headphones or earpieces available if required, and a more descriptive version is offered for visitors with visual impairments. Braille information panels, tactile models and Braille transcripts of the audioguide are available on request. British Sign Language tours can be accessed via Opus Touch handsets, and free carer entry is provided alongside a paying disabled guest. Staff are available to assist visitors in finding quieter areas of the museum if needed, helping to support a more comfortable visit.
With its atmospheric ruins, flowing thermal waters and inclusive visitor facilities, the Roman Baths offer a memorable and largely mobility friendly heritage experience in the heart of Bath.
