Castle House Museum in Dunoon offers a fascinating insight into the history of the town and surrounding Cowal area, set within the elegant Castle House overlooking the Firth of Clyde. Located in the beautiful Castle Gardens, the museum explores the story of Dunoon from the Stone Age through to the twentieth century, with displays covering topics such as geology, clan history, wartime life, steamboat travel, education and entertainment. Visitors can explore a variety of exhibits including historical artefacts, glass display cases, dioramas and themed rooms that bring the past to life. The museum also features a Victorian corridor with period rooms, a small cinema area showing historic postcards of Dunoon, and a gift shop where visitors can browse local items and historical photographs.

Accessibility is considered throughout the building to support a largely mobility friendly visit, although some areas of the historic property include unavoidable steps. There are two accessible parking spaces close to the entrance within the small on site car park. A ramp leads from the car park into the foyer, and a lift provides access from the ground floor to the museum entrance on the first floor. The lift measures approximately 29 inches across, and a manual wheelchair is available to borrow if required. Inside the museum, step free access leads to reception, and a stairlift is available to help visitors navigate the six steps into the main exhibition area. Most displays are arranged with space to move around comfortably, and seating with backs and armrests is provided throughout the galleries for visitors who may need to rest.

Some sections of the museum, including the final two Victorian rooms, are accessed via unavoidable steps with a handrail due to the historic structure of the building. An accessible toilet is located on the ground floor, and information boards are designed to be dyslexia friendly. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the museum and water bowls can be provided on request. Staff and volunteers are available to offer assistance during visits, helping ensure a welcoming and supportive environment for all guests.

With its engaging local history displays, scenic garden setting and thoughtful accessibility features, Castle House Museum offers an enjoyable and informative heritage experience in Dunoon.
