Chester Zoo is one of the UK’s largest and most popular wildlife attractions, offering visitors the chance to explore 128 acres of habitats and gardens filled with more than 20,000 animals from around the world. Home to over 500 species, the zoo provides an exciting and educational day out for families, wildlife enthusiasts and conservation supporters. Visitors can explore immersive habitats inspired by different parts of the world, from African savannah landscapes where elephants and painted dogs roam, to rainforest environments where critically endangered Sumatran orangutans live. Other highlights include lions, cheetahs, giraffes and many rare species involved in international conservation programmes. Daily animal talks and feeding sessions led by zoo rangers provide fascinating insight into the animals and the important work being carried out to protect endangered wildlife.

Chester Zoo has a wide range of facilities designed to support a mobility friendly visit. The zoo offers free disabled parking near the main entrance, with accessible pathways across much of the site to help visitors explore the large grounds. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters are available to hire, subject to availability and a refundable deposit, and it is recommended that these are pre booked before arrival. Accessible toilets are located throughout the zoo, including a Changing Places facility with a hoist, adjustable changing bench and sink located within the Jubilee toilet block. Some areas of the zoo include slopes or bridges with steeper gradients, such as Elephant Bridge and Wooden Bats Bridge, where assistance may be helpful.

Many animal habitats have multiple viewing points to ensure visitors using wheelchairs or mobility aids can still enjoy clear views of the animals. A wheelchair lift is also available at the Realm of the Red Ape building to assist visitors who may find ramps difficult to use. The Lazy River Boat Trip includes wheelchair access, although mobility scooters cannot be taken onto the boat.

Chester Zoo also offers several features to support visitors with sensory or hidden disabilities. The zoo recognises the Sunflower Scheme, and staff are trained to assist visitors who may require additional support. Sensory bags containing items such as fidget tools and ear defenders can be borrowed from Adventure HQ with a refundable deposit. A sensory trail and social story are also available to help visitors plan their visit in advance. Regular BSL interpreted talks and tours take place on the last Sunday of each month, and BSL video guides can be accessed via QR codes in selected areas of the zoo.

Visitors who require a carer to accompany them during their visit can receive a free carer ticket when purchasing a standard admission ticket. Evidence of disability may be required and carer tickets are collected from the ticket sales windows on arrival.

Registered assistance dogs are permitted within the zoo but must remain on a lead and under control at all times. Certain areas of the zoo may restrict access for assistance dogs to avoid distress to the animals, and visitors are advised to speak with staff on arrival for guidance.

With its extensive habitats, conservation programmes and accessible visitor facilities, Chester Zoo offers a memorable and inclusive wildlife experience for visitors of all ages.
