Dover Castle in Kent is one of England’s most impressive and historically significant fortresses, standing proudly above the White Cliffs and overlooking the English Channel. With over 900 years of history, the castle has played a vital role in defending the country and offers visitors the chance to explore a medieval royal palace, the mighty Great Tower and extensive wartime tunnels. Interactive exhibits, historic rooms and dramatic underground passages bring the castle’s rich past to life, including the Secret Wartime Tunnels used during the Second World War and Operation Dynamo.
Accessibility is supported across many areas of the site, although visitors should be aware that the castle is built on a hill with varied terrain. Blue Badge parking is available close to the Great Tower, and many of the main visitor areas, including the grounds, museums, wartime tunnels and exhibition spaces, are accessible via tarmac paths, ramps and level routes. The Great Tower offers lift access to upper levels, and step free access is available to the ground floor and key exhibition areas. Some sections of the castle include steep slopes, cobbled or gravel paths and dimly lit underground tunnels, so visitors may wish to plan their route in advance. Audio guides are available to provide detailed descriptions and enhance the visitor experience, and staff are available to offer support where needed.
Accessible toilets are located throughout the site, including in the Secret Wartime Tunnels, medieval tunnels, museums, restaurant and ticket office, all equipped with handrails, transfer space and accessible features. A fully equipped Changing Places toilet is available in the NAAFI Restaurant, featuring a height adjustable changing bench, hoist system, peninsular toilet, privacy screen and space for personal assistants. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the attraction, with water bowls provided at key locations including the admission building, tunnel shop, Great Tower Café and restaurant.
With its dramatic setting, immersive historic experiences and inclusive accessibility facilities, Dover Castle offers a memorable and mobility friendly day out for visitors interested in England’s military and royal history.
