Dudley Zoo and Castle offers a unique day out where wildlife conservation meets history. Set within the dramatic ruins of an 11th century castle in the West Midlands, the zoo spans around 40 acres and is home to a wide range of animals from across the world. With a history stretching back nearly 80 years, the zoo provides the opportunity to see many rare and endangered species while exploring the historic grounds of Dudley Castle.
Visitors can encounter animals such as Sumatran tigers, Asiatic lions, Asiatic bears and chimpanzees, alongside species including wolverines, Arctic foxes, red pandas and binturongs. The Bird House features a colourful collection of species including parrots, conures, ibis and flamingos, while the Lorikeet Lookout allows visitors to feed nectar to tropical birds in a walk through aviary. Guests can also explore Lemur Wood, Down on the Farm and a variety of habitats throughout the zoo, with daily talks and feeding demonstrations offering the chance to learn more about the animals and conservation efforts.
Dudley Zoo and Castle is located on a historic hillside site, which means some paths are steep and there are steps in certain areas. The zoo continues to make improvements where possible to help visitors with limited mobility enjoy their visit. Wide tarmac roadways provide access to many areas of the zoo and ramps have been installed where practical to improve access to enclosures and facilities.
Free Blue Badge parking is available in the main car park close to the visitor entrance, and drop off points are located nearby for easier access. A land train operates daily and travels between the entrance and the castle courtyard. Visitors who are able to walk short distances can use the train while portable wheelchairs can be stored in the luggage area at the rear.
Accessible toilet facilities are located in several areas across the site, including near the main entrance, the snow leopard enclosure, the Courtyard Café and the Queen Mary area. A Changing Places facility is also available near the Lorikeet Lookout, equipped with a ceiling hoist, adjustable changing bed, height adjustable sink, shower and privacy screen. This facility requires a RADAR key for access.
Manual wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters are available to hire from the main entrance. Wheelchairs require a refundable deposit, while mobility scooters are available for a daily hire fee with a deposit. Visitors are advised to reserve mobility equipment in advance.
Dudley Zoo also supports visitors with hidden disabilities. Sensory signage is located around the zoo highlighting areas that may be busy, noisy or have strong smells. Sensory bags containing items such as ear defenders and fidget toys can be hired from the Safari Shop with a refundable deposit. Quiet times are occasionally scheduled throughout the year and a social story is available to help visitors prepare for their visit.
Fully trained assistance dogs are welcome within most areas of the zoo but are not permitted in animal contact areas such as Lemur Wood, Lorikeet Lookout, the Wallaby Walkthrough or the farm contact paddock.
With its combination of historic castle ruins, wildlife conservation and family attractions, Dudley Zoo and Castle provides a distinctive and memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
