The Land of Iron Museum, also known as the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, offers a fascinating insight into the industrial heritage of the North East. Located on the original site of Loftus Mine in North Yorkshire, the museum tells the story of the ironstone mining industry that once shaped the region and supported the development of nearby towns and industries. Visitors can explore exhibitions filled with mining tools, machinery and personal stories from the people who worked underground. One of the highlights of a visit is the guided underground tour, which takes guests through the original haulage drifts of the former mine. Led by knowledgeable guides, the tour explores the ventilation systems used by miners and includes audio accounts sharing the experiences of young workers. Visitors can also witness a small demonstration blast, helping to recreate the conditions and techniques used by miners during the industry’s peak.

Accessibility across the site is considered where possible, although the historic nature of the former mine buildings and underground tunnels means some limitations remain. A separate disabled car park is located at the rear of the museum, and the main museum building itself is wheelchair accessible throughout. A portable induction loop is available to support visitors with hearing impairments. The underground tour takes place in original mine passages and can include uneven surfaces or tighter spaces, so visitors using large motorised mobility scooters are unable to take part. However, volunteers are available to assist visitors where possible during the tour, and helpers or carers accompanying disabled visitors are admitted free of charge.

Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the museum and mining areas, although other dogs are not permitted for safety reasons. Outdoor areas around the site provide space for visitors to relax, including picnic areas where guests can enjoy refreshments while taking in the historic mining surroundings.

With its authentic underground tours, historic mining exhibits and supportive accessibility features, the Land of Iron Museum offers a unique and educational experience exploring the ironstone mining heritage of Cleveland.
