Monkey World

Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre is a unique and inspiring sanctuary in Dorset, dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating primates from around the world. Set across 65 acres of countryside, the park is home to over 250 primates from more than 20 species, many of which have been rescued from neglect, abuse, or the illegal pet trade. Visitors can learn about their stories while seeing them thrive in carefully managed family groups.

The park offers an engaging and educational experience, with regular keeper talks and guided tours providing insight into the lives, behaviours, and conservation needs of these intelligent animals. These talks help raise awareness of global wildlife protection, making a visit both meaningful and memorable.

Families will find plenty to enjoy throughout the day, including the large Great Ape Play Area, one of the biggest adventure playgrounds in the South. There are also multiple cafés and picnic areas spread across the park, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings at their own pace.

Monkey World has made strong efforts to improve accessibility across the site. Most areas of the park are accessible to visitors with limited mobility, with pathways allowing access to the majority of enclosures. However, visitors should be aware that some areas include uneven surfaces and short sections with steeper cambers, which may be more challenging for manual wheelchair users.

The Woodland Walk is not accessible due to uneven terrain, although it contains only one primate enclosure, meaning most of the park remains accessible without using this route.

Accessible parking is available close to the entrance, with designated spaces offered on a first come, first served basis. Accessible toilet facilities are located near the main entrance and the gibbon enclosure. For visitors requiring additional privacy or support, the First Aid hut includes a space that can be used for adult changing.

While the park does not provide on-site wheelchair or mobility scooter hire, these can be arranged in advance through a local provider, with equipment delivered directly to the park for convenience.

Monkey World also provides thoughtful features for visitors with sensory or visual needs. Subtitled keeper talks are available via QR codes at enclosures, and written versions of talks can be requested. Sensory statues of primates are available for visually impaired visitors to explore through touch, offering a more inclusive way to experience the animals.

The park includes accessible play equipment such as wheelchair swings and nest swings, ensuring children of all abilities can take part in play activities.

Due to the sensitive nature of the rescued primates, dogs are not permitted anywhere on-site, including assistance dogs, as their presence can cause distress to the animals.
