The Sunderland Empire is one of the North East’s most iconic theatres, hosting major West End productions alongside a wide variety of live entertainment. Situated in a vibrant coastal city known for its strong arts and music scene, the venue offers a welcoming environment for visitors of all ages and abilities.
Accessibility is a key focus, with a range of features in place to support a comfortable and inclusive visit. There is limited Blue Badge parking available nearby, including spaces outside the Fire Station and on Paley Street, along with additional parking at The Bridges and St Mary’s. A drop-off point is also available close to the theatre entrance, making arrival easier for those with mobility needs.
The theatre benefits from lift access to both the Stalls and Dress Circle levels, allowing step-free movement throughout key areas of the building. The foyer, Stalls, and Dress Circle Bar are all accessible via lift, and at-seat service is available if preferred. Step-free seating is available across the entire Stalls level, as well as in Boxes B and C and Row J of the Dress Circle.
Wheelchair users are well accommodated, with designated spaces located in the Stalls and additional capacity within Dress Circle boxes. Some wheelchair spaces are positioned on a gentle incline, and certain locations are better suited to standard-sized chairs, so it is recommended to check in advance if needed. For those transferring from a wheelchair, aisle seats in the Stalls are the most suitable option, with specific seats held back to support accessibility requirements.
Accessible toilets are available on both the Stalls and Dress Circle levels and can be reached via lift. Radar keys can be used, or staff are available to assist if required.
The theatre also offers a range of additional accessibility features to enhance the visitor experience. Hearing support is available through the Mobile Connect system, which can be used from any seat in the auditorium. A variety of accessible performances are scheduled throughout the year, including audio described, captioned, and BSL interpreted shows. Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the theatre.
For visitors with sensory needs, the theatre provides sensory bags that can be borrowed free of charge. These include items designed to help regulate sensory input and make the experience more comfortable, without disrupting others. All items are cleaned between uses, and staff are available to provide more information on arrival.
While the building retains elements of its traditional theatre design, the combination of lift access, step-free seating options, and thoughtful support services ensures that Sunderland Empire remains an accessible and inclusive venue for a wide range of visitors.
