The The Alexandra Theatre, often known locally as “The Alex,” is a historic venue that has been at the heart of Birmingham’s entertainment scene since 1901. Showcasing a wide range of productions including West End musicals, comedy, and drama, the theatre combines its original architecture with modern efforts to improve accessibility for all visitors.

The theatre does not have its own parking, but nearby options include NCP New Street, just a short walk away, which offers Blue Badge spaces. Additional accessible street parking is available on Station Street, making it relatively convenient for those arriving by car.

Step-free access is available to the Stalls via a dedicated accessible entrance on Station Street, located next to the Stage Door. This entrance is operated by staff via an intercom system and typically opens around 30 minutes before the performance. Once inside, the Stalls level provides flat access throughout, making it the most suitable area for guests with mobility needs.

There are eight wheelchair spaces available within the Stalls, and aisle seating is recommended for those who wish to transfer from a wheelchair into a theatre seat. The layout of the Stalls allows for relatively easy movement, although other areas of the theatre are less accessible.

It’s important to note that there is no lift in the building. The Dress Circle, Upper Grand Circle, and Ambassador Lounge are only accessible via stairs, which may limit access for some visitors. However, staff are available to assist wherever possible, and at-seat service is offered so guests do not need to access bar areas, which are also located on upper levels and require stairs.

Accessible toilet facilities are located on the ground floor within the Stalls area, close to the accessible entrance. These are fully accessible, private, and unisex, with baby changing facilities also available.

The theatre also provides additional accessibility support, including hearing assistance via the Mobile Connect system, which can be used from any seat in the auditorium. A range of accessible performances are available throughout the year, including audio described, captioned, and BSL interpreted shows. Assistance dogs are welcome in the venue.

For those requiring closer proximity to the stage, recommended seating includes the front rows of the Stalls or Row A of the Dress Circle, although access to the Dress Circle involves stairs.

While the Alexandra Theatre retains many features of its historic design, the step-free Stalls level and dedicated accessible entrance ensure that visitors with mobility needs can still enjoy a comfortable and inclusive theatre experience.
